Tips to keep your Coton happy and healthy in the Philippine climate.
Brush your Coton daily to prevent matting. Bathe every 2 to 3 weeks with a gentle dog shampoo. Many owners keep a shorter "puppy cut" for easier maintenance, especially in the Philippine heat.
Feed a high-quality dog food appropriate for their size and age. Cotons can be prone to weight gain, so monitor portions carefully. Fresh water should always be available, especially in warm weather.
Cotons need moderate daily exercise, about 30 minutes of walks and play. They love interactive games and short training sessions. Avoid exercising in the midday heat; opt for early morning or evening walks.
In the Philippine climate, keep your Coton cool with air conditioning or fans. Provide shade and plenty of water. A shorter haircut helps them stay comfortable during hot and humid months.
Regular veterinary checkups are essential. Common health considerations include luxating patella, hip dysplasia, and eye conditions. Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date.
Cotons are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. Use positive reinforcement methods. Early socialization is important — expose them to different people, places, and experiences.
